THE WIZARD OF OZONE

Ozone!
Menage a trois.
Ozone is what happens when lightning, sunshine, or an electrical current splits up a garden-variety oxygen molecule with two atoms (O2). The resulting lonely, single oxygen atoms hook up with other O2 molecules to create a threesome, and O + O2 =
Closer to the ground, it does something similar. When sunlight hits hydrocarbons and such in smog, it also creates oxygen threesomes, which is why you hear ozone levels on the news – it’s a smog meter. It also helps clean up some of the gunk in smog, so
In fact, it’s pretty much a good guy all the time, including in your body. It’s an oxidizer, inserting oxygen molecules into any substance it combines with. Since oxidation is rust, it can destroy that substance.
Healthy cells in your body have enough antioxidants to keep this from happening, but a pathogen (say, a harmful virus, bacterium, fungus, or parasite) doesn’t. Ozone punches a hole through its cell wall like the Hulk, and disinfects it – kills it. Chlorine does, too, but one molecule of ozone packs the punch of three to ten thousand chlorine molecules, works over three thousand times faster, and doesn’t create the carcinogenic
by-products of chlorine.

Stands to reason, then, that ozone would have medical applications, but hanging around in a lightning storm like Ben Franklin to get some would be time-consuming and just a bit risky. Fortunately, a corona discharge (an electrical reaction like lightning, not the product of drinking lots of Mexican beer on a beach) can crank out plenty of O3 for medical use.
Ozone was in medical use as early as 1885 in this country. By 1930, ninety years after its discovery in Germany, it was being used by one Dr. E.A Fisch, a German dentist in Switzerland, and it’s recently gained a strong foothold with American dentists. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an advocate of ozone therapy, using it several ways:
- Ozonated rinse water irrigates and disinfects as work is being done, keeping pathogens from spreading into the environment or cross-contaminating equipment.
- Exposing inflamed nerves and diseased tooth structure to ozone can often prevent root canal therapy.
- Oils can be a medium for ozone, allowing it to be applied topically as a follow up treatment, introduced into dental hygiene products, and even used to treat nasal and ear infections
- Ozone can be injected directly into abscessed tissue to kill infection.
- When old fillings or root canals are removed or teeth extracted, chances are a menagerie of pathogens has been growing underneath them. Ozone prevents them from spreading into the bloodstream and becoming systemic, affecting other tissue.
- Custom ozone trays can saturate gum tissue and the nooks and crannies of tooth enamel, neutralizing complex structures of microorganisms that can create periodontal disease and decay, and may even contribute to re-mineralizing tooth enamel.

During the Civil War, amputation was a necessity for serious wounds, but by World War I, those wounds were being treated with ozone. Ozone dentistry has the potential to make drilling and filling and slicing and dicing – essentially, forms of dental amputation – obsolete one day.
