THE WIZARD OF OZONE

High above the Earth, lightning cracks. There’s no one around to hear the thunder as molecules split. As they reform, no one is there to witness something new and powerful being created, a superhero with the power to fight invaders capable of wreaking havoc on life as we know it.

The new creation soars five to ten miles above the planet, surrounding it in a protective shield that absorbs cosmic rays capable of burning plants and animals to a crisp, and this superhero’s name is…
Ozone!

Menage a trois.

Ozone is what happens when lightning, sunshine, or an electrical current splits up a garden-variety oxygen molecule with two atoms (O2). The resulting lonely, single oxygen atoms hook up with other O2 molecules to create a threesome, and O + O2 = O3, or ozone. Like other superheroes with a checkered past, ozone is a do-gooder – the ozone layer around Earth absorbs ultraviolet rays that would otherwise be way too strong.

Closer to the ground, it does something similar. When sunlight hits hydrocarbons and such in smog, it also creates oxygen threesomes, which is why you hear ozone levels on the news – it’s a smog meter. It also helps clean up some of the gunk in smog, so it’s the good guy again, not the bad guy, regardless of what the weatherman’s “Ozone Alert” implies.

In fact, it’s pretty much a good guy all the time, including in your body. It’s an oxidizer, inserting oxygen molecules into any substance it combines with. Since oxidation is rust, it can destroy that substance.

Healthy cells in your body have enough antioxidants to keep this from happening, but a pathogen (say, a harmful virus, bacterium, fungus, or parasite) doesn’t. Ozone punches a hole through its cell wall like the Hulk, and disinfects it – kills it. Chlorine does, too, but one molecule of ozone packs the punch of three to ten thousand chlorine molecules, works over three thousand times faster, and doesn’t create the carcinogenic
by-products of chlorine.

Go Fisch.

Stands to reason, then, that ozone would have medical applications, but hanging around in a lightning storm like Ben Franklin to get some would be time-consuming and just a bit risky. Fortunately, a corona discharge (an electrical reaction like lightning, not the product of drinking lots of Mexican beer on a beach) can crank out plenty of O3 for medical use.

Ozone was in medical use as early as 1885 in this country. By 1930, ninety years after its discovery in Germany, it was being used by one Dr. E.A Fisch, a German dentist in Switzerland, and it’s recently gained a strong foothold with American dentists. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an advocate of ozone therapy, using it several ways:

  • Ozonated rinse water irrigates and disinfects as work is being done, keeping pathogens from spreading into the environment or cross-contaminating equipment.
  • Exposing inflamed nerves and diseased tooth structure to ozone can often prevent root canal therapy.
  • Oils can be a medium for ozone, allowing it to be applied topically as a follow up treatment, introduced into dental hygiene products, and even used to treat nasal and ear infections
  • Ozone can be injected directly into abscessed tissue to kill infection.
  • When old fillings or root canals are removed or teeth extracted, chances are a menagerie of pathogens has been growing underneath them. Ozone prevents them from spreading into the bloodstream and becoming systemic, affecting other tissue.
  • Custom ozone trays can saturate gum tissue and the nooks and crannies of tooth enamel, neutralizing complex structures of microorganisms that can create periodontal disease and decay, and may even contribute to re-mineralizing tooth enamel.

Off to see the Wizard.

During the Civil War, amputation was a necessity for serious wounds, but by World War I, those wounds were being treated with ozone. Ozone dentistry has the potential to make drilling and filling and slicing and dicing – essentially, forms of dental amputation – obsolete one day.

Unlike Oz, there’s a real Wizard of Ozone behind the curtain.

Transcend Dental Health, with Dr. Matthew Carpenter, offers biological dentistry and supportive natural healthcare, including a full range of products and ozone therapies. (512) 255-3618 www.tdhtx.com

It’s important to understand that ozone is not a poison and that it has been used to help human health for more than 100 years. To give you a little history, In 1785, the Dutch chemist Martinus van Marum was conducting experiments involving electrical sparking above water when he noticed an unusual smell, which he attributed to the electrical reactions, failing to realize that he had in fact created ozone. A half-century later, Christian Friedrich Schönbein noticed the same pungent odor and recognized it as the smell often following a bolt of lightning. In 1839, he succeeded in isolating the gaseous chemical and named it “ozone,” from the Greek word ozein, meaning “to smell.” For this reason, Schönbein is generally credited with the discovery of ozone. The formula for ozone, O3, was not determined until 1865 by Jacques-Louis Soret and confirmed by Schönbein in 1867. Some other historical uses of ozone demonstrating its safety include its use as a disinfectant in drinking water in 1893, its use as a food preservative for cold storage of meats in 1909 and in 1939 ozone was found to prevent the growth of yeast & mold during the storage of fruits. Most people have heard of ozone because of the concerns with the holes forming in the ozone layer. Ozone in the ozone layer filters out sunlight wavelengths from about 200 nm UV rays to 315 nm, with ozone peak absorption at about 250 nm. This ozone UV absorption is important to life due to the fact that radiation intensity is 350 million times as powerful at the top of the atmosphere as at the surface on the earth. So ozone actually makes life on earth possible. Nevertheless, enough of UV-B radiation at similar frequency reaches the ground to cause some sunburn, and is responsible for the production of vitamin D in humans. In fact, even Benjamin Franklin believed that the presence of cholera was connected with the deficiency or lack of ozone in the atmosphere, a sentiment at the time that was shared by the British Science Association. Industrially, ozone is used to disinfect laundry in hospitals, food factories, and nursing homes and can be used as a disinfectant for water in place of chlorine. Ozone kills bacteria on food or on contact surfaces, can be used to sanitize swimming pools and spas. Ozone is very safe when used properly. The science behind ozone is somewhat complex, but basically the thing to understand is that it can kill viruses, bacteria, fungi, molds and parasites approximately 4000 times as effectively as bleach, but will not harm human cells if used at the correct dose. Ozone has many health benefits with respect to stopping pain and inflammation, building the immune system naturally and helping to treat and prevent cancer, but we use it extensively in my dental office because of its remarkable ability to improve healing.

Recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent The past 30 years have seen an extraordinary increase in consumer demand for safe, effective and cost-effective natural health care. Naturopathic medicine has emerged as the health-care profession best suited to meet this demand. Although it almost disappeared in the mid-twentieth century because of the popularity of drugs and surgery, naturopathic medicine now offers safe, effective natural therapies as a vital part of North American health-care systems in the twenty-first century. Naturopathic physicians are trained in the art and science of natural health care at accredited medical colleges. Integrative partnerships between conventional medical doctors and licensed NDs are becoming more available. This cooperation makes more effective therapies available to consumers. It increases patient satisfaction in their relationships with their care providers. More people are recovering their health by adding naturopathic medicine to their health-care options. “For example, an old appendix scar might cause migraine headaches, or a wisdom tooth extraction scar might cause chronic low-back pain. Because these relationships are totally unpredictable, doctors need to search for interference fields everywhere in the body. Interference fields are very common and the conditions that they cause are mostly untreated in mainstream medicine except by drugs, merely suppressing symptoms.” – European Injection Technique workshops; www.klinghardtacademv.com, info@klinghardtacademy.com
