Biological Dentistry Uniquely for You

How Gum Disease Works

Plaque grows on your teeth every day. Not all plaque is bad, however. Some plaque is composed of beneficial bacterial. However, the health of your teeth and gums is threatened when there is an increased growth of harmful bacteria.

Bad bacteria create acids as waste products. If these bacteria are not cleaned away, they begin to irritate your gums. Pockets then form between the teeth and their supporting gum tissue. Your immune system tries to address this irritation but this immune response begins to destroy your bone.

As bone is lost, pockets around your teeth deepen. With deeper pockets, it becomes impossible to clean these spaces under your teeth simply by brushing and flossing. Your gums will probably begin to bleed; bleeding gums allow bacteria to enter your bloodstream.

To control gum disease, you have to control the plaque. At Transcend Dental Health, every patient is educated on the best way to eliminate bad plaque. This not only keeps patients healthier, it can save them tens of thousands of dollars in dental and healthcare costs over their lifetime.

Dr. Chang and his staff offer education and the purest, healthiest oral hygiene products so patients can succeed in restoring and maintaining healthy gums.
